District News:
Pennfield Middle School Hosts New Bullying PREVENTION PROGRAM
During the Week of December 1 through
December 5, Pennfield Middle School hosted a new, hands-on bullying
prevention program. Bystander: A Portrait in Apathy is a program
that empowers students to confront the bullying issues they deal with
regularly.
Seventeen students were selected to take
part in the program. They rehearsed for two hours each day in order to
be ready to deliver three assemblies on Friday, December 5. The focus
was the role and responsibility of the bystander. The presentations
highlighted the importance of standing up for those who can’t stand up
for themselves alone. There was one assembly for each grade level,
followed by small group discussions.
The students who were chosen to perform
and present did a remarkable job delivering the intended message.
Furthermore, the feedback has been incredible. The students at
Pennfield were touched, moved and ready to make a difference when asked
about the impact of the assemblies. One student, when asked about the
assembly stated, “I thought that it was very powerful. I’m not going to
lie, walking in there I thought, ‘Oh great, another bullying assembly.’
But the whole thing was really strong and touching. This assembly can
make a difference.” Another said, “I thought that the assembly was
very good. It brought up situations that I didn’t think of. I would have
never thought bullying could go that far. It made me feel like I am
going to help others who are bullied. It was performed well. It made me
sad, but was important.”
This program addressed a sensitive issue
and did it with a unique twist, which will never be forgotten. Thanks
to the Home & School Association and the Administration at Pennfield,
the guidance department was lucky to be able to fund this special
initiative. A big thank you to Jillian Palmieri (creator and director
of the program), and all of the students who helped make it an
outstanding experience.
